Stay-at-Home Dad Chronicles

Ode to 2020, you insane, dumpster fire year!

Posted by Travis Theiss

Today is the last day of 2020. What a messed up year.
Not the kind you celebrate, but one filled with jeer.

It started like every year I’ve known for the past 43.
Then it took a wild turn and knocked me to my knee.

Before I knew it, I lost a job I had for four months long.
Sure it was a setback, but I know I would bounce back strong.

The unexpected came when Covid wreaked havoc all around.
Everything from job searches to school were on quarantine lockdown.

As if the year weren’t turning into one like I had never seen,
I became a virtual teacher with nothing but a computer screen.

It was tough but we made it through a challenging school year.
Hats off to my Mom and Mother-in-Law who made teaching their career.

I was surviving life as a stay-at-home Dad on a wing and a prayer.
Who knew one of the biggest challenges would be styling my toddler’s hair.

My oldest two kids told me stories that were very wide in scope.
My 6-year-old even threatened she may one day elope.

Who knew injuries when playing with my kids was a thing?
From eye pokes from my toddler to a broken toe when pushing a swing.

When the new school year started I agreed to be a virtual teacher again.
So far, so good, if you don’t count missing Zoom meetings now and then.

There are many things about 2020 I can’t wait to move beyond.
One of the blessings is being with my kids and forming a strong bond.

Having a year to spend every day with my kids is something I hold dear.
So thank you for the opportunity 2020, you insane, dumpster fire year.
