How to Deal with Grumpy Dad

Posted by Travis Theiss

This morning, I was feeling rough. I stayed up late last night watching a movie on Netflix, so my sleep wasn’t the best. Plus, I don’t think I drank enough water the day before, which results in a ‘kick-off the morning headache’. Not a good combo.

I was getting breakfast ready for the kids, but moving slow. I drank a glass of water, but my headache wasn’t going away.

My intuitive six-year-old daughter could tell something was wrong. She walked up to me and grabbed my hand, “You ok, Dad?”

“I’m ok,” I told her.

“You sure? You don’t look good,” she added.

“I don’t think I drank enough water yesterday, and I have a headache.”

“Well, you need water,” she replied. “What time did you go to bed last night?”

“I don’t know, it was after midnight. I didn’t sleep too well,” I answered to her grilling.

She gave me a look of disappointment and shook her head, “You should have gone to bed sooner.” One of the things I love about my six-year-old is that she isn’t afraid to call me out if needed. She keeps me honest.

“You’re right, I’ll go to bed sooner tonight,” I replied.

“Tell you what,” my daughter said leaning in. “After you put Sissy to bed for her nap, why don’t you lay down and take a nap too.”

“You sure you’re ok if I take a nap?”

“Yes, please take a nap. I don’t want to have to deal with grumpy Dad all day,” she zinged me as turned and walked away to eat her french toast sticks.

Well there you go. Guess I need a nap and more importantly, a better attitude.
