It’s the first day back to virtual school after the five day Thanksgiving break. When the kids woke, they didn’t immediately turn on their computers so they could get a jump on math, writing and other subjects. Big shock, huh? The first thing they did was look out their bedroom window to see if it snowed overnight. The forecast called for one to three inches of snow. They only saw rain.
“Where’s the snow?” they asked. I told them we can check throughout the day and see if it starts. When it comes to eager kids, patience isn’t always a virtue.
For the next few hours, I felt like I was living on the set of the Weather Channel.
“It’s 37 degrees Fahrenheit”
“Still raining”
“It feels cold out, but there isn’t any snow”
“It’s 36 degrees Fahrenheit”
“The rain stopped”
And so on, and so on, and so on.
Around 11:40, we were taking a break in the basement for a LEGO challenge. After completing her Star Wars related creation, my six-year-old daughter was ready to go upstairs and FaceTime her Gaga for her daily reading practice. As she walked up the stairs, I heard her scream.
I went to the stairs and asked if she was ok. There she stood jumping up and down yelling, “It’s snowing, it’s snowing.”
My nine-year-old and toddler hurried up the stairs to see if she was right. When what to their wonder eyes did appear, but miniature white flakes falling far and near.
They all bounced around and celebrated the winter wonderland going on outside. My son threw open the front door and stuck his hand off the porch to feel the snowflakes. Quickly behind him was my toddler hoping to see snow for the first time. My six-year-old put on her crotchet penguin hat, winter coat and gloves, and ran in circles on the deck. She hoped to catch snowflakes with her tongue because she said it was good luck.
The flakes weren’t big and it wasn’t sticking to the ground, but it didn’t matter to them. They were just excited there was snow falling from the sky. There’s nothing like watching the excitement of a snowfall through the eyes of three pumped up kids. For their sake, I hope we get much more than the predicted three inches of snow.
